The original and first version Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4, known as the “Steel Rim” (11870z), was produced from 1961 to 1966 and earned its nickname from the distinctive exposed stainless steel front rim surrounding the lens element. Its compact, lightweight design and fast aperture made it revolutionary for its time, and it is especially prized today for its dreamy rendering, soft glow wide open, and unique bokeh. Leica produced two variants: a standard version for the M2, and a version with “goggles” for the M3, which adapted the viewfinder magnification to suit the camera’s framing lines. In 1967, the second version (11870) was introduced, retaining the same optical formula but improving usability with more durable mechanics, better coatings, and increased contrast. While the v2 became a workhorse lens throughout it's run, the original Steel Rim remains a collector's favourite for its rarity, iconic styling, and unmistakably vintage character. This example is the M2 version without goggles and is in excellent working condition despite the visible marks to the barrel of the lens and cleaning marks to both front and rear elements. Leica Germany recently serviced this lens and works phenomenally. Includes equally rare OLLUX hood (in similar condition), 41mm UV filter and rear cap
