The Leica R4, built from 1980 to 1986, was the beginning of the modern, compact Leica R series. The design continued almost seamlessly up to the R7 and was only significantly changed with the introduction of the Leica R8 in 1996. The Leica R4 is a multi-automatic and offers not only the program automatic but also time or aperture priority and a manual mode. Exposure metering was either a selective or center-weighted integral metering, depending on the program. The shutter speed ranged from 1/1000 to 1 second. It can be used with a motor winder or motor drive as standard, so that a maximum frame rate of 5 frames per second can be achieved with the motor drive. In the course of production there were only minor detail changes. Originally only available in black chrome, a silver chrome version followed from 1982.
