The Leica VARIO‑ELMAR‑R 80–200 mm f/4, manufactured in 1998, is a high-quality telephoto zoom lens for the Leica R system. Its versatile focal length range covers the classic spectrum from short to long telephoto and is ideal for portrait, nature, travel, reportage and close-up photography.
The constant maximum aperture of f/4 enables consistent exposure control across the entire zoom range. The optical design, comprising twelve elements in eight groups, delivers balanced image quality with good sharpness, clear contrast and natural colour reproduction. The minimum focusing distance of 1.1 metres allows for detailed shots with a pleasing background compression, even at telephoto settings.
The high-quality metal construction, precise manual focusing and the integrated, extendable lens hood underline the lens’s professional character. The E60 filter thread also allows the use of standard screw-in filters. The ROM contacts transmit lens-specific data to compatible Leica R cameras, thereby enhancing electronic communication between the lens and the camera body.
